Fashion is full of beauty, creativity, and possibility — but it is also full of hidden plastic, toxic chemistry, and a waste problem that is growing faster than most people realise. What is a plastic-based fabric?

A plastic-based fabric is any textile made wholly or partly from fossil-fuel-derived synthetic polymers, such as polyester, nylon, acrylic, elastane, and many “performance” blends. These fibres are now the backbone of modern clothing: around 60% of fibres used in clothing are plastic-based, and synthetic fibres made up about 64% of global fibre production in 2020 [Geneva Environment Network].

That number matters because plastic-based fabrics are not just “materials”; they are a delivery system for pollution. They can shed microfibres during manufacturing, wear, washing, and disposal, and those fibres move into rivers, soil, air, oceans, and even human bodies [Pew].

What is wrong with using it?

The first problem is scale. The fashion sector is now responsible for about 9% of annual microfibre pollution to oceans, and textiles are the fourth-largest source of microplastic pollution in the EU [Geneva Environment Network].

The second problem is persistence. Microplastics do not biodegrade in the way natural fibres can; they fragment into smaller and smaller pieces, which means the pollution continues long after the garment leaves the wardrobe. The third problem is chemistry: fashion’s plastic problem is not only about fabric, but also about the toxic additives, dyes, coatings, and forever chemicals used to add water resistance, stain resistance, stretch, softness, and durability [COSH].

How bad is the problem?

Very bad, and still underestimated. One widely cited estimate says one gram of synthetic fabric can contain 3.7 million fibres, and up to 70% of a garment’s lifetime microfibre emissions can be released in the first five washes. Another estimate says textile manufacturing releases 120,000 metric tonnes per year of microfibres into the environment, accounting for nearly half of all microfibre emissions globally [Pew].

The broader fashion system is also huge in material terms. Global fibre production rose from 58 million tonnes in 2000 to 116 million tonnes in 2022, and is projected to reach 147 million tonnes by 2030 if business continues as usual. In the EU, consumers discard roughly 5.8 million tonnes of textiles every year, about 11 kg per person [Geneva Environment Network].

Why regulation matters

This is not a niche materials issue; it is a public-interest issue. Without regulation, the market rewards the cheapest, highest-volume, most disposable inputs, which is exactly how plastic-heavy fashion became normal in the first place [Pew].

Pew’s 2026 analysis says textile microplastic pollution could be cut by 85% by 2040 with comprehensive action across the product life cycle, and it identifies better design as one of the most effective levers. That is why regulation matters: it sets a floor, creates accountability, and stops responsible brands from being undercut by cheaper, more polluting alternatives [Geneva Environment Network].

Why recycled polyester is not enough

Recycled polyester is often presented as a clean solution, but it is really a less-bad synthetic, not a low-impact end state. It still sheds microplastics, still does not biodegrade, and still keeps the fashion system dependent on plastic as a core material [COSH].

There are also tradeoffs around durability and emissions. One source notes that recycled polyester fibres may release almost 2.3 times as many microplastics as virgin polyester in some contexts, and another reports a carbon footprint estimate of about 10x larger than virgin polyester in one study, showing how inconsistent claims can be when recycled content is treated as a blanket solution. The deeper issue is that recycled polyester can prolong the life of plastic in circulation without solving the underlying problem of fibre shedding, chemical additives, or end-of-life contamination [COSH].

Why should this matter to me?

Because fashion touches daily life more than almost any other industry. Clothing is worn on skin, washed in homes, discarded in communities, and produced in global supply chains that affect workers, ecosystems, and public health [Pew].

It also matters because the problem is not abstract. Microplastics have been found almost everywhere on Earth, including air, soil, water, and human bodies, and synthetic microfibres have been linked in research summaries to digestive, reproductive, cognitive, and respiratory concerns. Even if someone only cares about comfort, durability, or cost, plastic-heavy fashion often fails those tests too: garments pill, degrade, trap heat, and are harder to repair or recycle cleanly [Geneva Environment Network].

What can I do if I’m just one person?

One person cannot rewrite the entire fashion system, but one person can change demand, language, and momentum. Start with a simple rule: buy less, buy better, and ask more questions [Pew].

Practical actions include:

  • Choose natural or genuinely lower-shedding fibres where possible, especially for next-to-skin basics.
  • Read labels for hidden plastic in trims, linings, stretch, coatings, and hardware.
  • Prioritise repair, resale, swapping, and mending before replacement.
  • Wash less often, use colder cycles, and reduce shedding where possible.
  • Support brands that publish fibre composition, chemistry standards, and supply-chain transparency.
  • Ask companies direct questions about PFAS, synthetic content, and garment construction.
  • Share information, because social norm change matters almost as much as individual shopping decisions [Geneva Environment Network].

Most importantly, join the conversation. Communities change what feels normal, and normal is what industries respond to.
